Kuyenda Safari Camp
Kuyenda
is the simplest of our camps; traditional reed-and-thatch bungalows with
en-suite showers and toilets, creating a rustic retreat that will rival
any luxurious lodge. Two permanent waterholes either side of the camp make this area a
popular place for wildlife, and Kuyenda is notable for the top
reputation of its main guide, Phil Berry - the world's foremost expert
on the Thornicroft Giraffe.
Location:
Kuyenda
is located in the south of South Luangwa National Park, in what amounts
to roughly a two hour drive from the main entrance. Located on the banks
of the picturesque Manzi River, Kuyenda's natural beauty is only
complemented by the amount of wildlife in the area; making the camp
ideal for those who wish to simply watch the world go by.
Accommodation:
The accommodation is in four thatched rondavels made entirely of local
material including reed, thatch and wood. These rondavels are taken down
and rebuilt every year.
Each chalet is rustic but very comfortable with large spacious beds, mosquito netting and tasteful, traditional décor.
En-suite bathrooms with shower, toilet and washbasin are standard.
The bathroom is open to the stars and hot water is ordered in
advance for the traditional but effective bucket showers – an
essential safari experience!
The main dining area, sitting room and bar are in a small open fronted
thatched structure in the centre of the small camp and this is the
nucleus of all activities. Here traditional African décor, paraffin
lanterns and candle-lit meals add to the atmosphere and offer a truly
authentic feel.
Activities:
As
Kuyenda, like all of the bushcamps, is located inside the National Park,
big game is plentiful. The bird life at the camp is wonderful and
varied, and the camp’s small bird bath attracts a range of species to
the bar area, meaning guests don’t need to leave camp to enjoy the
wildlife.
For many years Phil Berry has been hosting and guiding at Kuyenda.
Phil has spent the last 30 years directly involved in conservation
and research of Zambia’s wildlife. He is the usual guide at Kuyenda
and his knowledge of the area is unrivalled, having spent almost 40
years guiding and living in the park. He ensures that everyone gets
a unique insight into this very special place. Walking and driving
safaris are both available from the camp.
